Blackberry Empathy, a Product Concept by RIM

The new concept phone from RIM, here is Blackberry Empathy. It is part of collaboration with the Art Center College of Design and designed by Daniel Yoon. It comes in unique design with diamond shapes on both up and bottom sides of the phone. The front side of Blackberry Empathy will feature full OLED touchscreen display that remains transparent when it is not in use. The other side will feature a standard portrait QWERTY keyboard. Those features will surely appear awkward for most of people, but those are things that make this phone really interesting.

Another exciting feature of Blackberry Empathy is its capability of integrate real human emotions with social networking. To get full performance, Blackberry Empathy includes a mood ring that will show moods in various colors based on blood pressure, body temperature, skin secretions and heart rate. This mood is integrated on each of your contacts, so you will know your friends moods once they are wearing the ring. As you are wearing the ring, your mood will automatically appears on your friend’s contact. In that case, your friends will know whether they can go right away greet you and send message or leave you alone because you are in sad and fragile mood. The mood colors will appear on the whole surface of the phone. It is also integrated in the phone’s keypad that will change color according to your emotional state. When you type message, the ring will convert your mood and send it together with your message. It also goes when you received a message; a series of colors will appear as a reflection of sender’s mood.

Furthermore, Blackberry Empathy allows you to connect straightaway to popular social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. Surely, those will include your emotional mood as well as other moods that have Blackberry Empathy and wear the ring. As you enter a conversation room, there will be a visual timeline appears showing you the moods of all users.

To access all features coming with Blackberry Empathy, just touch everywhere on the screen. Once you touch the screen, it will pop out a radial tabbed control wheel surrounding each of your contact consisting of most common uses features such as SMS, email, contacts, music and camera. Rather than tap on the feature’s icons, you have to pull the tab out of its radial wheel control to get access.

Overall, Blackberry Empathy is a very interesting concept phone by RIM. It may not be come soon because no technologies that can accomplish this feature yet. However, it does not mean that it will never come to reality.

Still working out on basic phone market, Motorola released its very basic phone namely Motorola W409G. Everything on this phone comes in a simple and minimalist way, both on its design and on features. In details, here is the review of the phone for your reference.

Motorola W409G comes with a clamshell phone measuring 97 x 48 x 18 mm and weighing 77 grams. The phone is designed in a minimalist and simple appearance. Similar to other clamshell phone these days, it also comes with external display. The external display features monochrome screen that shows signal strength, profile status, battery life, date and time. Above the screen, there is a camera lens. Around the phone’s side, there are microUSB port, volume rocker keys, and 3.5 mm headset jack. Flip open the clamshell phone to reveal the internal display that features 1.8 inches display with 128 x 160 pixels resolution and 64k colors supports. The keypad below the internal display is arranged in a simple way consisting of navigation array and alphanumerical keypad. Navigation array consists of two soft keys, a camera key, a back key, a Send key, an End or Power key and a square four directional pad.

Keep in mind that Motorola W409G is a basic phone, not a smartphone. Therefore, do not look ahead to great features or performance. It can be said that it is very basic phone with calling and texting features as its main features along with other basic features. In term of connectivity, Motorola W409G operates under dual band GSM (850/1900 MHz) network. It also manages to support GPRS and EDGE data network. Due to its low data network, opening WAP web pages become very slow. Other connectivity includes Bluetooth and microUSB connection. Coming to its messaging features, Motorola W409G only offers text messaging (SMS) and multimedia messaging (MMS). Unfortunately, there is no standalone email clients’ service but you can still open your email through web browser.

For multimedia features, Motorola W409G delivers poor performance. The camera that is located on the front side of the phone (clamshell closed) only comes in 2 megapixels camera with no flash and no autofocus. It manages to capture images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels resolution but the qualities are still average mostly poor. Luckily, it can also be functioned to record video. To store data, it provides external memory via microSD card up to 32 GB along with its internal memory. Other multimedia features include music player and FM radio, no standalone video player appears.

Notification types available on Motorola W409G include Polyphonic ringtones, Vibrate mode, and Flight mode. Phonebook provided is able to save up to 500 entries whereas each entry supports multiple phone numbers, picture caller ID, ringtone ID and other related information. Motorola W409G also comes with other features such as alarm, calculator, organizer, calendar, clock, call waiting, voice memo and speakerphone. In connectivity feature, Motorola i296 operates on the slowest network in US namely iDEN (800, 900 MHz) network. You can still get internet browsing experience through Myriad web browser supports WAP web pages. Due to its low data network, browsing internet seems to be a very poor and disappointed experience. Other connectivity available includes Bluetooth ver2.1 and microUSB connection. In addition, there is Push-To-Talk features through iDEN network as well as GPS navigation system with A-GPS supports. For messaging features, Motorola i296 comes with text messaging (SMS) and multimedia messaging (MMS). Text messaging (SMS) itself appears in a threaded view giving a nice touch of a rugged phone.

Motorola i296 does not offer multimedia features as it comes with no camera, no camcorder, no music player, no video player and no radio. Sadly, there is no additional external memory because it does not feature microSD card slot.
